Yesterday I revisited The Printmakers Art | Rembrandt to Rego. Taking more time to view some of the works and having greater space to do so (less crowds than at the members preview) allowed the subtler prints to be appreciated.

Harmony from about 1976 by Tōkō Shinoda (1913-2021) is a beautiful work which comprises of a heavy black block and a patina rich brushstroke with a whisp of calligraphic grass stalk between. This minimalistic rendering manages to encompass the pull and push of earthly forces and the dynamic vibrance of growth.

In another version of the work (not on show) the solid block becomes transparent with drifts of settled dark pigment whilst the upward stroke is weighed down in a solid black. The stalk remains unrepentant in its upward quest.

As there is no current listing for her on the NGS website –
