Wilsontown

Wilsontown

Wilsontown was established in 1779 near the village of Forth in Lanarkshire. At its height 2000 people lived in the village to man the ironworks and bellpits. The ironworks closed in 1842 and only a few ruined houses and the outline of the bell pits remain, woods and wildlife now colonise the site. Maintained by the Forestry Commission with 3 walks signposted with quotes.

“This ironworks brought ruin on my family. I wish my uncle had never found the ironston in the burn that day.” William Wilson Jnr.
