Traditionally the &#8220;jellygraph&#8221; was used to make short run copies &#8211; such as school class tests &#8211; but now it is used to make art mono-prints and background papers with modern acrylics.<\/p>\n<p>To make a plate you will need :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>a suitable plastic, metal or glass pan to set the plate in. (~250x250mm or similar to achieve 20mm depth)<\/li>\n<li>a heatproof jug or pan (for boiling water and mixing).<\/li>\n<li>a measuring jug.<\/li>\n<li>400ml water<\/li>\n<li>400ml glycerol (available in larger pharmacies ~ \u00a33)<\/li>\n<li>60g gelatin powder (5 sachets)<\/li>\n<li>optional &#8211; 15ml concentrated anti bacterial cleaner (optional &#8211; to prolong the plates working life by preventing moulds).<\/li>\n<li>optional &#8211; 2 sheets of smooth plastic (such as acetate sheets) or store in original mould.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_797\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-797\" class=\"wp-image-797 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hectograph1.jpg\" alt=\"hectograph1\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hectograph1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hectograph1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hectograph1-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-797\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The set plate in a pyrex dish.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Boil the water and add the gelatin, stirring until smooth. Add the other ingredients and mix well. Pour into the pan mould and skim any bubbles from the surface using a scrap of clean paper. Allow the plate to cool and set before turning out onto a sheet of plastic. Store the plate between 2 sheets of plastic to prevent the surface becoming damaged.
