{"id":24,"date":"2012-07-13T13:48:15","date_gmt":"2012-07-13T13:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/?p=24"},"modified":"2012-07-13T13:48:15","modified_gmt":"2012-07-13T13:48:15","slug":"van-gogh-to-kandinsky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/2012\/07\/13\/van-gogh-to-kandinsky\/","title":{"rendered":"National Gallery of Scotland &#8211; Van Gogh to Kandinsky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tomorrow sees the opening of <em><a title=\"van-gogh-to-kandinsky\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgalleries.org\/whatson\/exhibitions\/van-gogh-to-kandinsky\/\">Van Gogh to Kandinsky\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; <\/em>a wonderfully curated collection of symbolist landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>Full of Scandinavian and Northern European light the landscapes range from isolated lakes and mountains to &#8220;silent cities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights for me was <a title=\"Joaquin Mir\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wikigallery.org\/wiki\/painting_332040\/Joaquin-Mir-Trinxet\/El-Abismo-(The-Abyss)\" target=\"_blank\">The Abyss<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Joaquin Mir, whose work I first saw in Barcelona and Montserrat (where I purchased a print, a tiny detail of the brush strokes can be seen below).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/mir.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26\" title=\"Detail from Montserrat print\" src=\"https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/mir-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Detail from Montserrat print\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/mir-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/mir-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/mir-1024x1022.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/mir.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Detail from Montserrat print.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another nice touch is audio headphone station in each room with music selected to match the paintings.<\/p>\n<p>The only negative I could see was the labeling &#8211; the best way to view these paintings is from a short distance away, but the label can only be read from a few centimeters \u00a0which means there will be a constant block of bodies in front of the paintings during busy periods.
