{"id":106,"date":"2013-07-05T18:37:27","date_gmt":"2013-07-05T18:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/?p=106"},"modified":"2013-07-05T18:46:05","modified_gmt":"2013-07-05T18:46:05","slug":"conde_nast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enr.me.uk\/fromthenegative\/2013\/07\/05\/conde_nast\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Cond\u00e9 Nast"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>&#8216;The essential function of a photograph is to be reproduced in a magazine.&#8217;<em> <a title=\"AL\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Liberman\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Liberman<\/a>, art director, Vogue.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fashion photography from the archives of the <a title=\"CN\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cond%C3%A9_Montrose_Nast\" target=\"_blank\">Cond\u00e9 Nast<\/a> publications &#8211; including <a title=\"V\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vogue_(magazine)\" target=\"_blank\">Vogue<\/a> and <a title=\"Glamour\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glamour_(magazine)\" target=\"_blank\">Glamour<\/a> magazines- is on show at the <a title=\"CAC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk\/Venues\/City-Art-Centre\/Exhibitions\/2013-14\/Coming-into-Fashion---A-Century-of-Photography-at-\" target=\"_blank\">City Art Centre in Edinburgh from the 15th of June until the 8th of September<\/a> as part of the <a title=\"EAF\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edinburghartfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edinburgh Art Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I was looking at strong, powerful works which announced the mature work of these photographers,&#8221; <em>said exhibition curator <a title=\"NH\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fep-photo.org\/curator\/herschdorfer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nathalie Herschdorfer<\/a>.<\/em> &#8220;There is a\u00a0Helmut Newton\u00a0style, a\u00a0David Bailey\u00a0style, a\u00a0Peter Lindberg\u00a0style, a\u00a0Miles Aldridge\u00a0style. The works in the show announce the best of these styles. In the early Twenties, he realised what the photographic medium could bring to his magazines. He was a man of his time and was looking ahead. He wanted to work with people who were talented artists and not necessarily good practicians.\u00a0The vision of the photographer was recognised as a value, then the photographer was asked to adapt it to the magazine&#8217;s needs.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cond\u00e9 Nast initially hired\u00a0the <a title=\"AM\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adolph_de_Meyer\" target=\"_blank\">Baron Adolf de Meyer<\/a>, <a title=\"ES\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Steichen\" target=\"_blank\">Edward Steichen<\/a>, <a title=\"Irving Penn\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irving_Penn\" target=\"_blank\">Irving Penn<\/a> and\u00a0<a title=\"WK\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Klein_(photographer)\" target=\"_blank\">William Klein<\/a> in the early 1900s, his publications would then go on to work with the likes of <a title=\"HPH\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horst_P._Horst\" target=\"_blank\">Horst P.
