On the north-east coast of Zealand in eastern Denmark lies Helsingør. The name is derived from the word hals meaning “neck” or “narrow strait”, referring to the narrowest point of the Øresund (Øre Sound) between what is now Helsingør and Helsingborg, Sweden.
William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet takes place mostly at Kronborg Castle in Helsingør (Elsinore).
